Living Intentionally

One of my favourite books in the world is Walden by Henry David Thoreau – not for its “getting back to nature” theme, but rather because it advocates living intentionally.  I’ve accepted to its core the notion of living life on my terms.  In my opinion, one of the best passages from the book is the following:

Every man is tasked to make his life, even in its details, worthy of the contemplation of his most elevated and critical hour. If we refused, or rather used up, such paltry information as we get, the oracles would distinctly inform us how this might be done. I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear;

Yes – living is so dear.  Are you doing it intentionally?

Are you pursuing that passion that is inside of you?  Have you published your Art to the world?  Are you advancing that business that lives dormant inside of you?  Are you excited about the “work” that you do on a day-to-day basis. Do you have a plan for your life?  Are you on that plan?

If not….honestly, why not?

Living is so dear.  Don’t let fear create a world of regret for you in the future.  Who cares if you fail.  Dust yourself off and try again.  Did you start a business and it didn’t go as you hoped, so now you have a “story” in your head that you are not an entrepreneur.  It is just a story.  You created it in your mind, so you can just as quickly destroy it in your mind.

Don’t be a character in a tragic story in your head.  At least pursue the courageous story.  Everyone is inspired by people who exhibit courage.  If you are pursuing what makes you come alive you shine to the world.

This is the kind of leadership that the world needs right now. It doesn’t matter what your passion is. As long as it resonates inside of you then it is worth pursuing.  Start today to live life deliberately.  Decide what makes you come alive.  Make a plan to take action in this direction.  Then start today, right now, to create.
