Give A Man A Fish, Teach Him How To Fish, Or Teach Him How To Learn How To Fish

Here is an interesting leadership concept I recently came across.  It is based on the concept of “meta-learning”

We all know the saying:

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime

But then I came across another perspective,

Teach a man how to learn how to fish.  Then you help him with everything in his life.

When you teach someone “how to learn” how to do something, you open up a world of possibilities (not just relating to a specific task like fishing) but relating to anything that is possible to learn.

If you teach someone how to learn for themselves, not only do you help them with the specific task that they are focusing on in the moment (ie. fishing), but you are also increasing their ability to learn everything in a better way.

As a result you are actually helping them with everything in their life (not just fishing).

Helping someone learn “how to learn” is perhaps the most influential thing that you could ever do for someone else.
